At Skin by Dr Caroline, we specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of skin concerns, including pigmentation issues. Whether you're dealing with uneven skin tone, dark spots, or melasma, understanding pigmentation is the first step towards achieving clearer, more radiant skin.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation is the natural colouring of your skin, determined by melanin—a pigment produced by melanocytes that protects against UV damage. When melanin production becomes unbalanced, it can lead to uneven tone, dark spots (hyperpigmentation), or lighter patches (hypopigmentation). This disruption can result from various factors, and understanding the cause is key to treating it effectively.

Causes

"The primary causes of pigmentation change are: Sun Exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin production, often leading to sunspots or freckles. Hormonal Changes: Conditions like melasma are often triggered by hormones, such as during pregnancy or from contraceptive use. Skin Trauma or Inflammation: Acne, eczema, or injuries can lead to post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Ageing: As we age, our skin can develop age spots or liver spots due to long-term sun exposure.
Genetics: Some people are more prone to pigmentation due to their skin type or genetic background."

What treatments do we offer for pigmentation?

AlumierMD Facial

The AlumierMD Facial is a professional treatment targeting pigmentation with medical-grade ingredients. It combines exfoliating acids to remove dead skin, boost cell turnover, and fade pigmented lesions. Collagen production is stimulated, and melanin activity is balanced to improve tone and texture. LED therapy enhances results by reducing inflammation and supporting healthy cell function, leaving skin clear, radiant, and rejuvenated.

The DMK Enzyme

The DMK Enzyme Facial is a targeted treatment that works at a cellular level using enzyme therapy and “science your skin recognises.” Designed for pigmentation, it improves circulation, oxygenation, and collagen production. A tightening enzyme mask activates the plasmatic effect, boosting nutrient flow and visibly revitalising the skin. The result: clearer, smoother, more youthful-looking skin with improved tone and texture.

ENQUIRE

BioRePeel facial

BioRePeel facial - a non-invasive, 'no-peel' chemical peel with minimal downtime. Unlike traditional chemical peels that can cause visible peeling, BioRePeelCl3 works deep within the skin while keeping the outer layer intact, making it ideal for those who want results without excessive flaking or downtime. This treatment contains a mix of TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) 35%, amino acids, vitamins, and exfoliating acids. It works by exfoliating dead skin cells for a smoother texture, hydrating and nourishing the skin, and reducing acne, pigmentation, and fine lines.

NeoGen

NeoGen Plasma is a cutting-edge treatment that uses nitrogen plasma energy to stimulate collagen, improve skin tone, and reduce signs of ageing. It resurfaces the skin, softens lines, and fades pigmentation for a smoother, more radiant complexion. Results continue to improve for up to 18 months and are only available through medically-registered practitioners.

Advanced Nutrition Programme

Advanced Nutrition Programme supplements target pigmentation from within by balancing inflammation, regulating melanin, and supporting gut health. Unlike topical treatments, they address root causes internally. Offered alongside in-clinic treatments, ANP’s SkinEven IQ formula is recommended for pigmented and uneven skin, with best results seen over 3–6 months.

ENQUIRE

Microneedling

Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries that stimulate collagen and elastin production, helping to break down pigmentation. This minimally invasive treatment promotes skin rejuvenation, improving texture, tone, and firmness. It also enhances absorption of skincare products, boosting their effectiveness.

ENQUIRE

CryoPen

CryoPen uses a precise stream of cold N2O gas to freeze and destroy pigment-producing cells without harming surrounding skin. This causes the treated area to scab and peel over days, revealing clearer, lighter skin. The procedure is quick, with minimal discomfort and downtime.

ENQUIRE

Uneven skin tone - Patches of darker or lighter skin can cause the complexion to appear blotchy or dull.

Psychological impact - Visible pigmentation, especially on the face, can affect confidence and self-esteem, leading some people to feel self-conscious or anxious about their appearance.

Increased sun sensitivity - Areas of hyperpigmentation can be more reactive to UV exposure, worsening the pigmentation and increasing the risk of sun damage.

Difficulty with make-up application - Uneven skin tone or textured pigmented spots can make it harder to apply makeup smoothly or achieve a natural finish.

Risk of worsening with incorrect treatment - Using harsh products, over-exfoliating, or incorrect DIY remedies can aggravate the skin and worsen pigmentation or cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
