4 Ways to Achieve Radiant Skin

At Skin by Dr Caroline. We believe great skin is for everyone! Here are some of our top tips for healthy and clear skin, all year round…

Step 1. Cleanse and Balance

We have four easy steps if you are looking to get radiant skin. The first step is to start cleansing your skin without disrupting its natural barrier. When your skin is properly cleansed, it’ll be ready to absorb all the nutrients from your other skincare products.

It is very important not to skip this step in your skincare regime, because otherwise, all the great products you’re using – and healthy habits you’re following, are not going to be effective. Your skin will be unprepared or unable to receive the nourishment and care you’re sending its way.

Without a good cleansing routine, your pores can become clogged with makeup build-up, excess oils, dead skin, and the environmental toxins you encounter every day. Your skin is an organ of elimination. When healthy, you naturally detoxify through your skin, but when your skin is not properly cleansed and cared for – blocked pores often result in red, splotchy patches, acne, rosacea, and an oily appearance.

Cleansing your skin doesn’t mean stripping it of natural oils and moisture. You want a cleanser that gently cleanses and replaces lost lipids while restoring your skin’s natural pH.

We recommend the cleansers by medical grade brand AlumierMD; these are prescribed by your skin therapist and are specific for your skin needs; sensitive skin may respond well to non-foaming Sensicalm, whilst oily skin might work best with Purifying Gel Cleanser. We recommend a consultation with one of our advanced skin therapists to determine the best products for you.

Step 2. Nourish and Correct

Your skin is like a blank canvas after cleansing, and it needs to be primed and rebalanced naturally if you want it to accept the nutrients and healing properties of the moisturiser that follows.

Properly nourishing your skin will smooth and lift your skin, rebalance your skin’s pH, and help correct discoloration caused by the harmful effects of the sun, pollutants, and other toxins you come into contact with. We recommend Alumier MD EverActive C & E to protect your skin from free radicals and environmental pollutants.

Nourishment is far more than just about putting creams and serums on your skin. Achieving youthful, radiant skin requires giving your skin the proper amount of nutrients it needs to stay hydrated and healthy.

That begins with your diet and making sure you’re eating good foods that are going to supply your skin – and internal organs, including your brain – with a healthy dose of hydration to help them fight off the harmful effects of your daily environment. We love the supplements by Advanced Nutrition Programme, sustainably sourced, ethical products with high-quality ingredients at the correct doses – it’s not called ‘oral skincare’ for nothing!

Step 3. Repair and Nourish for Radiant Skin

After you cleanse and nourish your skin, it’s time to rehydrate, soothe, and reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation in your skin.

Moisturisers return much-needed hydration back to your skin and can contain nutrients that can relieve itching and repair dry, irritated skin.

Again, drinking a minimum of eight cups of filtered water a day is great for youthful, fresh, vibrant glowing, radiant skin.

Daily moisturising is essential for building up your skin’s resistance to appearing weathered and aged. Moisturiser can be used morning and evening, to aid in repairing your skin’s barrier, and to help your skin feel supple and nourished.

And at night, when you moisturise your skin it helps to heal, relieve, and rejuvenate it while you sleep, allowing the active ingredients to work their magic without interference from external factors. AlumierMD has created moisturisers for all skin types – just book a consultation with our in-clinic skin specialists to find yours!

Step 4. Protect your skin

Finally, and arguably the most important step in your skincare regime, is SPF. The sun’s rays are present even on dull and grey days, and so our advice is this – think of it as light screen, not sunscreen, and wear it whenever there is daylight (that’s 365 days a year!!)

SPF protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for 90% of skin ageing. We recommend a physical sunscreen, containing zinc and titanium oxide, which will reflect the sun’s rays and protect your skin. We love the products by AlumierMD, which have sunscreens for dry, oily, and sensitive skin. They even have a versatile tint, which can act a bit like a BB cream to blur any skin imperfections and mean you don’t need to wear make-up.
